Course Description & Methodology

This Learning Academy module provides an introduction to sensitive communication with bereaved parents for professionals working in Crematoria and Cemeteries.

The module hosts a webinar delivered by Dr Chantal Lockey of the Foundation for Infant Loss, exploring the realities of baby loss and the impact of communication at times of profound grief. It focuses on building understanding, confidence, and compassion when supporting bereaved families in cremation and burial settings.

You will learn how thoughtful, sensitive communication can positively influence bereaved parents’ experiences, and how to avoid language or actions that may unintentionally cause additional distress.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this Learning Academy module you will have:

  • Developed an understanding of baby loss, including key statistics, reasons why babies die, and different types of loss.
  • Gained awareness of the ongoing taboo surrounding baby loss, including a personal insight.
  • Recognised the importance of communication when supporting bereaved families, and the impact it can have during cremation and burial processes.
  • Learned what to say and what not to say when communicating with bereaved parents, using practical, sensitive approaches.
  • Understood the specific considerations and challenges of supporting bereaved families within Crematorium and Cemetery environments.
